A "transit" occurs when a planet (or moon or asteroid or other object) crosses in front of another. In June 5, 2012, Venus crossed in front of the Sun, and it is visible as a shadow in the picture below. Careful observations of transits can provide a wealth of information, such as the distance between the Earth, the Sun, and Venus.
